Glass is a generic category for a wide variety of different-sourced types of glass. There are silicate glasses (made from silica, the main component of sand), as well as other types like lead glass (commonly called crystal), desired for its clarity, though much more fragile than silicate glass. This sophisticated translucent material can take many shapes, tones and sizes. It has a majestic capability of refraction by splitting the light in many colours. It makes a great design material due to its versatility and delicate presence. This week we selected five projects where glass is a key component in the overall design composition. The Bucke Street Studios By Locke for its protagonist thick-glassed facade that shines through the outside and inside of the hotel, allowing natural light to filter through every room without sacrificing privacy. The Conservatorium Hotel for its glass structures conveys a sense of time travel between the old and new, becoming something between a greenhouse and museum. The Gates Hotel South Beach for its refracting glass installation that shoots rays of tinted light in many directions, creating a kaleidoscopic effect on the hotel lobby. The Baccarat Hotel & Residences New York for its immense glass facade and interiors abundant in every form of crystal . The W Ibiza for its spa area where a circumference of softly-lit glass panels surrounds the area, conveying a sense of serenity with its blue tones and meditative patterns.
