When Marcel Duchamp first perfected the concept of ready-mades in art, he opened a door that never closed, that later influenced the way we conceive contemporary art nowadays. He wasn’t a pop artist but the way he appropiated ready-made objects from the industrialised world and turned them into art is a similar exercise to what artists like Andy Warhol did.
Pop art is known for its appropriation of mass-media images and its hints at the capitalised industrialised world. These, in a way, become another type of ready-made. Images of celebrities, public figures, brands, and more become something else. It brings the visual language of advertising graphic design into an artistic terrain dominated by thick brushstrokes and identifiable signature gestures. Techniques like screen printing, offset printing, were initially (and still are) mostly used to reproduce images massively, in order to sell a product or lifestyle at large scales. Pop art makes use of those techniques and brings gives them a totally different environment and meaning.
